weekend distraction: peonies

IMG_4241-mod1

I love peonies. Who can say just why – the delicate proliferation of petals, the elaborate, explosive configurations… some instinctive affinity I can’t explain.  They are in season on the east coast now and I finally took some home,  spending a pleasant, meditative half an hour trimming and fiddling around with them in this porcelain pitcher. Every time I change the water I can fiddle with them some more, so it’s a nice, interactive purchase.

Want to try some more ambitious flower arrangements. Wabi-sabi has been on my mind, the aesthetic of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.”

Their fragrance is lovely, like a young, light, restrained rose with maybe a hint of white floral in these particular blooms; tuberose, lily. I hope at some point to lord over a patch of earth and plant different varietals all over.

into: glassware, varietals and usage

glassware1

I am into glassware. [Concurrently, I am into drinking.] I would say I am on the path to being deeply into glassware. If I did not break so many glasses, I would own a fair amount of glassware, and even so…

Here is an excellent guide to matching your beverage to the ‘correct’ glass type, by The Boys Club. I don’t follow such guides to the letter by any means, but I like to be aware of them and to understand the principles behind them. And this particular chart reminds me of some species overview chart of biological varietals…have always had a weakness for such charts (a couple of clicks will take you to a full screen view). And I appreciate even the flimsiest excuse to get more glasses.
