“The beauty myth tells a story: The quality called “beauty” objectively and universally exists. Women must want to embody it and men must want to possess women who embody it. This embodiment is an imperative for women and not for men, which situation is necessary and natural because it is biological, sexual, and evolutionary: strong men battle for beautiful women, and beautiful women are more reproductively successful. Women’s beauty must correlate to their fertility and since this system is based on sexual selection, it is inevitable and changeless.

None of this is true.  “Beauty” is a currency system like the gold standard. Like any economy, it is determined by politics, and in the modern age in the West it is the last, best belief system that keeps male dominance intact.”

I have new bruises this week, courtesy of la bicicletta.

American Apparel dress, Converse, Mulberry bag, Spektre sunglasses. On the lips: Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy lipstick in Tumultuous. (This formula is phenomenal)

Sundry incidentals

1. I have not shaved the legs in many weeks. I am not fully convinced of the virtue of the shaved leg.

2. In certain bodycon/bodysuit contexts, I think: no bra. In many backless cases the appeal of the smooth, unbroken plane of the back far outweighs the (socially inconvenient? they are quite harmless, quite common) fact of the nipplesAs Karla Deras put it in answer to an undergarment query, let them breathe.

3. As for the bottoms, Commando.

After years (years!) of futile* hunting, I found a pair of knee high leather boots. The leather is gorgeously soft. You can’t quite see but they have a modest heel. They were destined to become best friends with this jacket.

*bootless…

Boots better folded up or down? Can’t decide…

This is my new favorite lip color thing.

So glad the weather for this jacket has finally come around again. Coach knee-high boots (thrifted), Allsaints Cargo leather jacket, Express leggings, J Crew Kiss Kiss tee, Solange Azagury-Partridge Hotlips ring (thrifted), Mulberry bag (thrifted), Spektre sunglasses. On the lips: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso. This stuff is incredible, it goes on opaque in one intense layer and doesn’t move until you take a makeup remover to it (and it’s stubborn even then) or eat something greasy. This shade, Beso (the name fits the look, no?*), is a lot like MAC’s Russian Red lipstick, a deep, siren-worthy blue red.

*Got tons of compliments on this, and hardly ever get complimented on anything, honestly. A Northeast thing, I think. Even a smile is kind of uncommon on the street, though a certain kind of appreciative stare isn’t unheard of. Not that I am especially interested in feedback (I want to do whatever, wear whatever, because because because because because) but it can be interesting social data, what gets compliments. Even more so here in the land of reluctant social interaction. I realize I note compliments more consciously with perfume, for whatever reason.
